Welcome to PAINT+CLAY. This is a blog about Kat Hutter and Roger Lee, and our collaborative endeavors as partners and artists working in the neighborhood of Highland Park, Los Angeles.
Roger and I met in graduate school at Clemson University in South Carolina, where I was studying painting and Roger ceramics. Roger would skateboard by my studio as I would try my hardest to pretend I didn’t notice….didn’t work so well….! Roger has been working in ceramics for 20 years, and I have been painting for almost as many. We push each other in our creative lives and now are putting our drive and motivation together while letting you in on our projects as they are happening.
After living and working together for a number of years (you will find out just how long at some point if you stick with us) and many attempted collaborations, we have decided to put our minds and hands together, focusing on the materials of paint and clay. We make work wherever we can, and FINALLY have what we have always wanted…. studios at home (aka…garage and back house)! Our experiences of living in various regions of the US have brought us back to Roger’s mainland of L.A. We love the grit, passion, and dedication the Angelenos have for “the creative lifestyle” and feel it is the right place to be for what we are doing. This blog is a mash-up of our story, as well as our projects. I will publish more about our experiences, and projects influenced by living in the South, Portland, Lake Tahoe, the Midwest and now L.A…….so stay tuned!
